Christians in Canterbury construct new "cathedral"

Joel Edwards sitting in the Orange ChairChristians in Canterbury this week began the construction of a new cathedral – this time with plastic bricks - symbolising their commitment to being good news in their community. Canterbury, famed worldwide for its cathedral, and considered the traditional home of Christianity in the UK, was the venue for t... more

Local Story

Eastbourne

Churches in Eastbourne have pushed aside theological differences to become a positive Christian witness in their community. Hope 08 was an example of how the churches are working together on a practical level with a litter clear-up. A telephone hotline for vulnerable and elderly people to call, if they n... more

Cardiff

Multimap let us down at the crucial moment, so spent a few reflective moments in a new-build residential estate lay-by, before making a bad decision and adding on 20miles to the journey to our accommodation.  But as we had nothing better to do anyway, the bay area and Cardiff countryside did not lose its charm third time around.  The journey to Glenwood Church was thankfully much less eventful, despite our momentary concern that we were being directed into an industrial estate. (Good route, that Seawall Road.)

Set up is quick now that it’s so familiar, but the cathedral now takes a good 45mins to build.  Frankly, we were flagging until we remembered we still had M&S chocolate refrigerator cake left over from yesterday which happily worked its magic and revived us within minutes.

The evening soiree with our friends from Cardiff was certainly a quieter affair than last night, but Joel’s presentation provoked some of the most interesting questions of the tour.  We’re often asked why keep the term evangelical, and tonight was no exception, but we also grappled with a little of what we lose if we abandon it, and how we should prepare ourselves to work in an increasingly post-Christendom context.  Take a look at the Forum…

Thanks to Paul and Steve, and the EA Wales team for joining us. The real highlight of the evening has to have been watching Joel and Elfed on their suited knees packing away a plastic cathedral – priceless.

Swansea - 21 May

We LOVE Swansea! After 4 hours on the M4, we finally saw the Lankyfella sign (or some such Welshness) which hailed our imminent arrival at Cornerstone Church. More...

Sutton - 18 May

We ditched the van (and sadly the orange chair) for our morning in Sutton, and piled our stuff into Joel’s car instead. An early morning jaunt to Surrey gave us time to guess at the response of Jason Clark’s crowd to Joel’s message! More...

Norwich - 7 May

We check out of our rooms, drive 3 hours to Norwich (a fine city), and feel like we’ve entered a time warp as we walk back into the same rooms. More...

Leicester - 6 May

Sun shining once again as we hit the M1. Slight hitch getting stuck down a wrong dead-end, but finally check-in our hotel opposite the Walkers Stadium. More...

Walthamstow - 27 Apr

Walthamstow - 27th April - Our third date finds the team making our way by bus, tube and car to Emmanuel Christian Centre, Joel’s home church! Situated in the recently renovated Walthamstow Academy, the church facilities are spotless, with an open-air floor plan and colourful turquoise decor. We arrive to a warm welcome, greeted by Pastor Doug and organiser Chantelle. Doug’s children are just as eager to help, piping up that they will escort us to the refreshment room at our every whim! Eastbourne - 24 Apr

Eastbourne – Day two on the Big Agenda for Change Tour. The morning of day two has seen the beautiful spring Canterbury sunshine give way to a rather autumnal mist and drizzle but the team is not dispirited, still buzzing from the previous evening’s great success. More...

Canterbury - 23 Apr

Well we're off! The good people of Canterbury proved to be gracious guinea-pigs as we launched the tour at St Andrew’s URC. An uneventful trip down the surprisingly sun-drenched A2 brought Alliance staff, an oversized orange chair and a baker’s triple dozen of Sharpie permanent pens to the historic city. More...
