 Theology and Public
Affairs work
On 28 September over 20 theologians
and public policy experts met to advise the Theology and Public
Affairs teams on some of their forthcoming work and to reflect on
past projects. Topics on the agenda included amongst other things:
Muslim-Christian relations, work with the Advertising Standards
Authority, a project looking at the theology of development and
considering our involvement with next year’s general election. It
was an excellent meeting with helpful advice and input received that
will shape our work over the next 6 months. More info >> email Susannah

People nationwide are choosing to live simply
"There all sorts of reasons to
try and live more simply, but for us the main one was a desire to be
more generous," said Phil Whittall, Lead Elder at North Shrewsbury
Community Church and one of the founders of Breathe, a Christian
Network for Simpler Living. "We couldn't see how the values of
society lent themselves towards developing generosity -
instead they just seemed to increase selfishness. On the other
hand, the Bible is full of examples of the amazing generosity of
God. Jesus said it was more blessed to give than to receive, so we
set on a life project to discover the blessings of giving
more." For
some, living simply is a choice for just one month, for others it's
a way of life. We'd love you to join us for the month of
October 2009. But
if that's too soon for you, or if a whole month is not realistic,
you can do Simplify for yourself some other time, or you can live on
less for a week or two. Sign up now and tell us your story of
how you've committed to living simply and giving
generously. What is Simplify >> www.simplify.org.uk or

Politics
Update on church services at the
party conferences
Christians in Manchester are coming together to worship during the
Conservative Party Conference on 6
October in Manchester Town Hall . Whatever the political
leanings, this service is seen as an opportunity to join together with
MPs and add a significant Christian message. We hope the church
service will be the largest fringe event of the Conservative Party
Conference. The event will be repeated next year when the Labour
Party Conference takes place in the city. The
Christian community is furthermore involved in several breakfast
meetings and fringe events on social justice at home and overseas,
organised in conjunction with the Conservative Christian Fellowship.
In addition, over the past two weeks the Liberal Democrats have met
in Bournemouth and Labour in
Brighton . At all of the conferences
Christians within the parties have organised a variety of events including church
services and other fringe meetings. More info >> www.network-ea.org.uk and www.ccfwebsite.com
