Micah Sunday
has landed!
|
 |
Hundreds of churches
marked Micah Sunday on 14
October. Expressing their commitment to speaking out
on issues of global poverty, churches up and down the country
preached messages about justice, watched the Micah Challenge DVD,
prayed, and wrote to the Government urging it to
act.
Pictured above are members of Queens Road Church,
Wimbledon, signing letters to the Government. Below, International
Christian Fellowship in Borehamwood are praying for the cause.
Churches can hold a Micah Sunday 07
service any time until the end of
2007.

Criminal Justice and
Immigration
Bill |
 |
On 18
October Dr Don Horrocks, Head of Public Affairs,
gave evidence to the House of Commons Committee scrutinising the
wide ranging
Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill. He
stressed that there was no case within this bill for further
extending incitement to hatred legislation on grounds of sexuality.
The Evangelical Alliance was the only religious organisation
called to give evidence, but it was encouraged by the support of
many Christian organisations such as CARE, Maranatha, the Christian
Institute and the Lawyers Christian Fellowship. While the Alliance
supports legislation that prevents the stirring up of hatred, its
view remains that the existing law is adequate to deal with offences
relating both to religion and
sexuality.

Burma
Protests |
 | Burma has recently come
to the forefront of concern internationally as the military Junta’s
violent rule led to a crackdown on peaceful protesters and the
crushing of internal dissent.
Evangelical Alliance member charity Christian Solidarity
Worldwide (CSW) has been tirelessly campaigning on this issue for
many years. The Evangelical Alliance join CSW in encouraging
Christians around the world to stand in prayer and solidarity for
Burma.
In response to the current crisis in their home country, the
Burmese exiled community in London are holding a permanent vigil in Parliament Square,
opposite the Houses of Parliament. They are there 24 hours a day,
seven days a week, until mid-December.
Evangelical Alliance Staff have joined with them in praying
outside Parliament each Monday. Our Burmese friends have requested
us to designate Monday evenings
as an evening of Christian solidarity.
Please pray
>> for an end to the military regime’s
attacks on ethnic minorities and the continuing violations of human
rights including the use of rape and torture by the military
regime. Christian Solidarity

Asylum
update
|
 |
On October 24 a delegation of ten
Christian leaders, led by the Alliance’s Public Affairs team, met
with the Home Office Asylum Operational Policy Unit. The discussion
centred upon how to deal with the issues of asylum and conversion
outlined by the Alliance’s Alltogether for Asylum
Justice report.
We are particularly concerned that Home Office
officials understand the need to better understand Christian faith
so that genuine converts can be protected. A meeting was held on
September 27 between
Christian Human Rights groups and the Home Office Country of Origin
Information Service to discuss how ways to ensure that the most up
to date intelligence on the persecution of Christians is available
for the Home Office to use in dealing with religious persecution
claims.
Read Alltogether for Asylum Justice report
>> http://www.eauk.org/public-affairs/socialjustice/upload/alltogether-for-asylum-justice.pdf Please pray
>> for the Alliance and the Home Office.
Pray that no Christian asylum seekers with a well founded fear of
persecution will be sent home against their will to possible torture
and even death. Your prayers make a real difference - many
thanks.

Prime Minister to work with Christian leaders
to address community
issues
|
 |
Representatives
of the Evangelical Alliance Directorate team as part of the
Black
Christian Leaders Forum met with the Prime Minister on 25 October. The scheduled 30 minutes turned into 45 minutes, allowing
the team to cover all the agenda items.
Issues
discussed included a commemoration of the abolition of slave trade,
crime, youth services and raising aspirations of black youth. Other
matters to be raised in future meetings with the Government include
youth and education, abortion and teenage pregnancy and the
Charities Act 2006.
Joel
Edwards chaired the group, with Dr R David Muir, Baroness Amos,
Pastor Nims Obunge and David Lammy MP also in attendance. The PM
expressed a genuine willingness and commitment to work with Church
leaders on the above issues and urged
them to continue helping build stronger communities.
The meeting concluded with Pastor Nims Obunge
praying for the Prime Minister.
The
PM indicated that he would like for the group to meet again in eight
months time. This is a fantastic opportunity for us at the Alliance,
along with some of our partners to work with and continue to
influence Government thinking and policy on a range of strategic
issues. We are beginning to look at how best to progress the
commitments given by the PM to strategically continue the
conversations across Government.
Please continue to pray
>> for fruitful outcomes in all aspects
of our work with the Government. Thank you for all your
support.

The
Alliance Notice Board (online)
|
 |
Why shout it from the rooftops,
when you can reach a large evangelical Christian audience by
advertising in the Alliance Notice
Board and the Alliance
Notice Board (online). If you want to tell our
members about a prayer initiative, job or training opportunity,
Christian event or a wide range of other services and resources,
the ANB and/or the ANB (online) could be the
solution.
The Alliance Notice
Board is mailed bi-monthly with idea
magazine to 25,000
addresses. With entries costing from as little as £30 it provides a
very cost effective way of reaching our membership.
The Alliance Notice Board
(online) has been launched on 1 November
2007 and is quickly becoming the place to look for Christian Events,
Vacancies, Products and Services. Online
advertisers will receive a free web and email
link.
Please note that 60% of our
members fill leadership roles within their churches, meaning that
Alliance Notice Board advertisers reach
highly committed Christians who are likely to be decision makers
within their fellowships.

Friday Night Theology launches
online discussion
forum
| Friday Night Theology (FNT) –
the regular comment from the Evangelical Alliance on events of the
week – has now launched an online discussion forum. The aim of FNT
is to use events of the week as a springboard for evangelism, so
this forum may end up being a place where we share stories of
witness. Or it may just be a place where you discuss the contents of
that week’s FNT.

Resourcing
you: Advent Prayer 2007 - an ideal way to
prepare for Christmas |
 |
Advent Prayer provides daily
reflections inviting Christians to consider the metaphors describing
Jesus in the Gospel of St John, and to lead from there to related
passages elsewhere in the Bible. As the reader does this, our prayer
is that they will discover once more the power of Scripture to
impact their lives and equip them to serve and follow
Jesus.
This daily prayer guide
is sponsored by CWR and is recommended for use by Churches, Prayer
Groups, Bible Study Groups and individuals during the build up to
Christmas. A free copy
can be found in the November/December edition of idea.
