What's it like working for the Alliance? by Richard

Richard Nelmes, Senior Membership OfficerWorking for the Alliance

The best thing about working for the Alliance, what really gets you out of bed each morning, is being part of something so much bigger than a single church, mission, or organisation. Meeting so many different people with such diverse ranges of skills and experience gives you a ‘mountain-top’ view of God’s work in the UK – daily! Knowing the ultimate purpose of your work also gives you a sense of ownership that leads to an enjoyment and focus that is difficult to beat.

Training

The Alliance recognises your skills and devotes time and effort developing them. I attend external courses and internal training regularly which develop and sharpen my areas of expertise, but it’s the one-on-one mentoring which I’ve found to be equally valuable. Taken at my own pace with a senior member of staff in a different area of the organisation, mentoring has given me fresh perspectives on issues from routine tasks to long-term career goals.

Community

The sense of community in offices is great – staff meet regularly for prayer, worship and to enjoy lunches together. This gives ample opportunity to build up solid relationships with colleagues which not only helps when problems arise that need tackling together but it’s also a pleasure to enjoy company and develop lasting friendships.

Other benefits

There are other benefits. The interest-free season ticket loan really helped me when I first came to London and the salary is reasonable for a charity. The non-contributory pension is a bonus I didn’t expect and the office’s proximity to central London makes it easy to get to and convenient for going out after work.
