Rev Joel Edwards, General Director of the Evangelical Alliance presents his first online Christmas message. It’s inspired by a recent visit to the Holy Land where he met with Palestinian Christians, Christians from other communities and Jews. He makes the link between the hope and contradictions that existed in Bethlehem at the time of Jesus’ birth and those that are present there today.
Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus in the crib remain a flawless biblical image – but that is put in the context of a vulnerable teenage girl giving birth to the Prince of Peace in a strange town. In today’s Bethlehem with its strong military presence, there’s the reality of check points, a huge wall between Israelis and Palestinians and the need to balance security and justice.
Joel says we all have a role to play in an on-going story and that despite the pain, peace is the goal.
