This Easter, Joel Edwards reflects on the bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act 1807, the contributions of William Wilberforce, ex-slave Olaudah Equiano and other courageous men and women of vision, the world over. He also talks of the powerful prospect of Hope and the need to act against modern day slavery, affecting millions of people.

He relates a Christian story of hope and redemption. Hope transforms anger.
It’s the hope that powered Wilberforce and made Equiano give himself to the cause of freedom. The horrors of the past can empower us do something positive in the present.

This is at the heart of what Easter is all about.

He says nothing exemplifies death and resurrection as clearly as our slavery to sin and our freedom from it.

Joel reminds us that God redeemed us through the sacrifice of his only Son, whose resurrection brought us life.

Joel invites us to remember, reflect and respond.

Peter Lynas, the director of Evangelical Alliance in Northern Ireland, has welcomed the news that Sir Paul Coleridge, a senior Family Court Judge, is launching a campaign to promote marriage and reverse the appalling and costly impact of family breakdown.1 The news comes on the first working day after the Christmas and new-year break, which is known in legal circles as Divorce Day.
