Micah Challenge is a global movement of Christians, Christian organisations and churches united to eradicate global poverty. The focus of the global movement is to hold world leaders to account on the Millennium Development Goals, promises made by 189 nations in 2000 to halve the number of people living on less than $1 a day by 2015.
The movement is inspired Jesus’ teachings on and concern for the poor and by the challenge of the prophet Micah to God’s people: “And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah Challenge calls on Christians to ensure justice is done, to embrace mercy in our hearts and to be obedient to God’s commands regarding the poor.
In the first half of 2007 Micah Challenge UK ran a campaign called Blow the Whistle: more than 25,000 postcards were sent to the Prime Minister; hundreds of churches across the country held a Micah Challenge Blow the Whistle Sunday service; and hundreds of people attended a Blow the Whistle worship service and rally. Micah Challenge looks forward to seeing this movement grow in the run up to 2015.
