An attempt to introduce compulsory counselling and a “time to think” period for women seeking abortion was defeated by MPs recently. Ann Winterton MP’s Ten Minute Rule ‘Termination of Pregnancy (Counselling and Miscellaneous Provisions)’ Bill on Abortion was defeated by 182 votes to 107 in the House of Commons on 5 June.
Dr R. David Muir, Public Policy Executive Director of the Evangelical Alliance commented, “The Bill would have compelled women who wanted an abortion to have counselling and to be given information about the possible effects. This seems very sensible and the defeat of the Bill shows the lack of respect for human life pervading our ruling elite."
Nola Leach, Head of Public Affairs at Christian Charity CARE, said shortly before the vote, “In the interests of empowering women so that they can make informed choices, it is vital to provide information that is grounded in the latest research, making them aware of all relevant considerations, including the risks. Failure to provide women with anything less than this is an affront to their dignity.”
