Government anti-semitism proposals

Statement from the Evangelical Alliance

30 March 2007

The Evangelical Alliance has welcomed the firm response of the Government to the all-party House of Commons report which highlights the problem of increasing anti-Semitism.

David Muir for the Evangelical Alliance commented, "At a time when society is rightly emphasising the unacceptability of intolerance and racism it is disturbing to hear that anti-Semitism is on the rise. It may be that society has become too complacent in thinking that such attitudes belong to the past. We welcome Communities Minister Phil Woolas' vigorous response and urge the Government, police and the educational establishment to take whatever measures are necessary - including consideration of possible legislation - to ensure that a climate of hostility and prejudice towards Jews does not re-emerge in Europe and the UK".

Notes to editors:
The Evangelical Alliance UK, formed in 1846, is an umbrella group representing over one million evangelical Christians in the UK and is made up of member churches, organisations and individuals. As part of a movement ‘uniting to change society’, the Alliance promotes unity and truth, acts as an evangelical voice to the state, society and the wider Church, and provides resources to help members and other evangelicals live out their faith in their communities.
