Joel Edwards, the General Director of the Evangelical Alliance, is to formally take over as Chair of the Churches Media Council in June.

The Churches Media Council, (formerly the Churches Advisory Council for Churches Media Council LogoLocal Broadcasting), aims to promote the Christian faith in the media and support Christians in broadcasting. It also holds an annual conference; in previous years, speakers have included Mark Thompson, the Director-General of the BBC, and Ann Widdecombe MP.

The CMC also hosts the Andrew Cross awards for excellence in religious coverage. Previous winners have included the Guardian’s Stephen Bates (Religious Writer of the Year), and BBC Scotland for the programme ‘Teen Commandments’ (Best TV Documentary).

Joel Edwards commented, “The CMC have established a steady and effective track record of gathering Christians in the world of broadcasting to impact the work of significant agencies such as the BBC and OfCom.

I feel very privileged to have been invited to succeed Bishop Tom Butler, and look forward to working with the Council to build for the future."
