Call on Prince Charles to become 'Defender of the Faith'

22 October 2006

The Evangelical Alliance, which represents Christians across the UK, is calling on Prince Charles to become the Defender of the Christian faith at his Coronation.

A landmark report by the Evangelical Alliance, ‘Faith and Nation’, is launched on Monday 23 October. Christian denominations and representatives from other faiths were invited to contribute. ‘Faith and Nation’ gives 100 recommendations on areas as diverse as religious liberty, the environment, and constitutional matters, including the call for the Coronation Ceremony to retain the phrase ‘Defender of the Faith’.

Prince Charles has previously expressed a wish to become ‘Defender of Faith’, rather than ‘Defender of the (Christian) Faith’.

Launching ‘Faith and Nation’, the Evangelical Alliance’s Public Policy Director, Dr. R. David Muir, said, “The report offers Christians, people of other faiths, and those of no faith, resources for engagement, discussion and action on a wide range of contemporary issues. We hope the report will help people understand the continued importance of the Christian faith in 21st century Britain”.

Notes to editors:
The Evangelical Alliance UK, formed in 1846, is an umbrella group representing over one million evangelical Christians in the UK and is made up of member churches, organisations and individuals. As part of a movement ‘uniting to change society’, the Alliance promotes unity and truth, acts as an evangelical voice to the state, society and the wider Church, and provides resources to help members and other evangelicals live out their faith in their communities.
