The Evangelical movement must not be confused with Fundamentalism

Statements

Letter to The Times Newspaper in response to 'Scientific proof of God?'(May 15) in which a link was made between being a member of the World Evangelical Fellowship and being a fundamentalist

16 May 2007

A recent letter to 'The Times' made a link between being a member of the World Evangelical Fellowship and being a fundamentalist (Read this letter). The Evangelical Alliance submitted this reply:

Sir,

The Rev Michael Counsell falls into the common trap of confusing the Evangelical movement with Fundamentalism (letters, May 15). Fundamentalism is a recent, American phenomenon, which has a right-wing agenda.

Evangelicals use our commitment to the Bible to challenge those in power, from campaigning for the abolition of slavery two hundred years ago, to current initiatives such as the Micah Challenge, holding world governments to account for their promises to the poor.

Evangelicals are very happy to present reasonable arguments for belief, as the popular Alpha Course demonstrates.

The Rev Joel Edwards, General Director of the Evangelical Alliance UK

Notes to editors:
The Evangelical Alliance UK, formed in 1846, is an umbrella group representing over one million evangelical Christians in the UK and is made up of member churches, organisations and individuals. As part of a movement ‘uniting to change society’, the Alliance promotes unity and truth, acts as an evangelical voice to the state, society and the wider Church, and provides resources to help members and other evangelicals live out their faith in their communities.
