Green Party

The Green Party is the principle green political party in England and Wales, with sister parties in Scotland and Northern Ireland.  It has its roots in the PEOPLE Party, founded in 1973, which became the Ecology Party in 1975 and the Green Party ten years later.

Currently the Green Party has no representation in either Houses of Parliament following the death of Lord Beaumont of Whitley in 2008.  There are two Green MEPs and two members of the London Assembly are from the Green Party.  At a local level the Green Party has strong representation in specific areas, for example, they are the official opposition on Norwich City Council. At the General Election, alongside Norwich South, the Green Party are targeting Brighton Pavilion and Lewisham Deptford.

Until 2008 the Green Party did not have a leader, just a male and female Principle Speaker.  However, following a referendum of the party, and a leadership election, Caroline Lucas MEP became leader for a two year term with Cllr Adrian Ramsey as her deputy.

The Green Party's policy platform is centred on a plan to tackle rising unemployment and the threat of climate change. This would be done by breaking down banks so they are not 'too big too fail' and stopping tax avoidance. The revenue generated would be directed towards creating green jobs and increasing the supply of renewable energy.
