The Evangelical Alliance previously responded in October 2003 to the General Register Office consultation on the Civil Registration of Births Marriage and Deaths, ‘Civil Registration: Delivering Vital Change’.
Along with our Brethren friends ‘Partnership’ we argued that these proposals constituted ‘controversial legislation’. We shared our concerns with the General Register Office who kindly came down to meet with us twice at our offices in London.
Our conclusion that the proposals constituted controversial legislation was also reached by the parliamentary committee that looked into the issue of the reform of Civil Registration and concluded that using the device of a Regulatory Reform Order was inappropriate and the proposals were shelved.
