Jimmy Carter Interview - Evangelical Alliance Statement

The Evangelical Alliance was privileged to carry an interview in the November/December edition between idea editor Rich Cline and former US President Jimmy Carter, in what was his only print interview in the UK in 2006. We trust that all members will welcome and affirm his efforts relating to peace and global poverty.

All views expressed in the interview are clearly his own, refer mainly to the situation in the United States and do not necessarily represent the views of the Alliance. We regret that this was not made clear and that a specific disclaimer to this effect was not printed alongside the article.

Members and supporters should feel assured that the Alliance maintains its historic position with regard to gay and lesbian partnerships and has reiterated these most recently in the Faith and Nation report (please see the relevant recommendations from the report below).

Marriage and Family Recommendations from the Faith and Nation report.

25. Commend and support the divine ordinance of marriage as exclusively between one man and one woman, and promote it, together with the family, as central to the well-being of society.

26. Call on government to promote laws and policies and financial incentives that strengthen marriage and family life as foundational for civil society.

27. Resist church services of blessing for same-sex partnerships as unbiblical.

28. Support Christian civic officials (e.g., registrars and members of adoption panels) who find themselves compromised by new regulations that would force them to act contrary to their religious conscience, particularly in connection with civil partnership ceremonies for same-sex couples.
