Panahpur Mentoring Scheme
'Valuable and insightful'
'Excellent. I have been able to work through areas which have been challenging for me and I have felt supported pastorally at the same time'
'Very helpful for me personally and professionally, I would highly recommend it'
What are these people talking about ?
A mentoring scheme, recently launched to help grow leaders in mission. The scheme is targeted at emerging leaders in mission (newer leaders) and needs suitable experienced Christian leaders to volunteer as mentors to make it work.
The scheme may be new but the concept is not. There are plenty examples of mentoring relationships in the Bible, such as Paul and Timothy and Moses and Joshua.
Mentoring is a powerful and biblical way of developing new leaders. It can work in many contexts, and as you can see from some of the feedback provides great benefits for the person being mentored.
'My Mentor listens to me all the time and opens new doors for thinking'
'It is a great thing in that you have a pair of fresh eyes or perception of things because they are outside your context'
However what is less well know is that mentoring benefits the mentor as well. For example developing mentoring skills is a powerful tool that can be used in your own ministry and family as well as within a formal scheme. As well as the joy of seeing your mentee grow, their situations and perspectives can be stimulating and challenging to your leadership too.
So how does the scheme work? People who want mentoring register and people who are able and willing to mentor register. The scheme provides training for both mentors and mentees, matches them up and supports the on-going relationship. We encourage people to meet virtually, typically on skype or phone, once every 4-6 weeks for a minimum of one year.
Many people in Christian mission and ministry could benefit from mentoring. Our focus is on emerging leaders in mission, typically in their first or second full time role in mission, with a primary focus outside the church family, living anywhere in the world including the UK. We want to develop these people and give them a headstart in their leadership formation and development.
Our approach is non-directive, helping people find their solutions rather than telling them what to do and off-line (we never match mentors and mentees from the same organisation to ensure objectivity and avoid any conflicts of interest).
Our mentors need to be mature Christians, with suitable skills and leadership experience (in mission, ministry or secular fields)
As church leaders we are asking you for two things
- Think who is an emerging leader in mission and let them know about the scheme
- Think whether you as a church leader and other leaders in the life of your church could participate and benefit from this valuable ministry, by volunteering as mentors
