Mobile phones

  • There are now 80 million mobile phone subscriptions in the UK.
  • 91% of the UK population over the age of 14 have at least 1 mobile phone; in 2000 the figure was 36%.
  • The number of text messages ent each year has increased by 2000% in the last decade and in 2010 129 billion text messages were sent. That's an average of 145 per monthly for contract phone users and 125 messages per month for pre pay phone users.
  • 27% of adults and 47% of teenagers now own a smartphone.
  • 59% of smartphone users have acquired their phone in the last year (2010-2011) and they make significantly more calls and send more texts than regular mobile phone users - 81% of smartphone users make calls every day compared with 53% of regular users.
  • The number of mobile voice minutes has grown by 250% in the past decade and in 2010 we spent 125 billion minutes talking on our mobile phones.

Internet usage

  • 77% of UK homes have a computer.
  • 74% of Uk households have a broadband internet connection.
  • In April 2011 internet users were spending an average of 1 hour 40 minutes a day online.

Social Media

  • According to the Internet in Britain 2001 report 60% of British internet users use online social networking sites, up from 49% in 2009, and 17% in 2007.
  • Users of social networking by people under 25 has stabilised at 90%.
  • Facebook now has 800 million active users worldwide.
  • More than 50% of Facebook's active users log on any given day.
  • According to Dick Costolo Twitter CEO, Twitter has 100 million active users worldwide but almost 40% do not say anything they just log in to see what others are saying.
  • 50 million Twitter users log in each day and the average number of tweets per day is around 230 million.
  • The UK is the 2nd biggest Twitter country by population (USA has the biggest). 7.87% of Twitter users are based in the UK.
  • In March 2011 14.7 million people in the UK accessed social media or blogging sites from their mobile phone.
  • The number of people accessing social media sites from their mobile phones on a daily basis has increased over the last year by 79% and in May 2011 54% of mobile users of social networking sites looked at the sites on a daily or near daily basis.

Television and audio visual

  • 10 million TVs were sold in the UK in 2010 nearly all of which were "HD ready".
  • The majority of homes (93%) have adopted multi-channel TV.
  • 46% of UK homes have a DVR.
  • In 2010 33% of homes said they watched HD TV broadcasts but 66% of homes have "HD ready" TVs.
  • Viewers currently watch 4 hours of TV a day.
  • 1 Million internet enabled TV's were sold in the UK during 2010.
  • Take up of digital TV on main TV sets is 93%
