Joint Degree in Applied Theology and Performing Arts
Saltmine Trust, in partnership with Regents Theological College has just launched a brand new degree course, validated by the University of Wales. Starting this September, this joint degree in Applied Theology and Performing Arts provides students with a unique opportunity to study a wide range of performance techniques, taught by the best practitioners and teachers currently working in the field of Christian performance, alongside modules in Applied Theology taught by the faculty of Regents Theological College, an institute that has been training preachers, evangelists and church leaders for the past eighty years.
This degree is the first of its kind in the UK and combines a high level of practical exploration and application with academic rigour, ensuring that the qualification has value to people looking to work professionally within the world of performing arts, as well as to those who would like to use their degree to go on to teach, preach etc. It is an ideal course for Christians who have a gift for performance and would like to learn how to develop that gift further in the service of God.
Course leader, Richard Hasnip says: 'We live in a world where people seem to be more interested in stories than in evidence and facts. If you want to know where the big cultural debate is happening, I don't think you look in a laboratory or a scientific journal or even a church - you look on a cinema screen, on a TV or on a stage. We want to help the church to be able to take part in the debate, to help them to be part of the discussion on how we should live. In order to do that, we need to be fluent in the language of performance because that is how stories are told these days. This course is designed to help people to share their faith in the most creative way possible'
