Facts and stats about Fresh Expressions of Church

What is a fresh expression?

A fresh expression is a form of church for our changing culture established primarily for the benefit of people who are not yet members of any church.

It will come into being through principles of listening, service, incarnational mission and making disciples.

It will have the potential to become a mature expression of church shaped by the gospel and the enduring marks of the church and for its cultural context.

The Church of England added an additional question to their annual parochial returns in 2006 so that they could look at how many churches are either planning or already running a fresh expression project. Here are the results:

  • 51% of all churches were either running or planning a fresh expression
  • 4 in 10 (39%) of parishes indicated that since 2000 they had begun a fresh expression of church that involved a new and regular activity.
  • 33% of churches are involved in activities aimed at people who do normally attend church
  • 48% of those already involved in a fresh expression have been sufficiently encouraged to plan additional initiatives
  • 89% of fresh expressions running at the time of the survey involved adults over 25 years of age
  • 69% involved children under 16 years of age
  • 33% involved young people aged between 16 and 25 years
  • In total 216,100 people were involved in fresh expressions, that is an average of 50 per parish
  • Smaller parishes were less likely to be involved in fresh expressions of church but they were beginning to become more involved as the number of small parishes planning their first fresh expression project initiatives was equal to the number of larger parishes planning their first project
