Frequently asked questions
What is Square Mile?
Square Mile is an Evangelical Alliance initiative which aims to catalyse and equip Christians to take a truly integrated approach to mission, expressed in four dimensions:
Mercy: demonstrating God’s compassion to all.
Influence: being salt and light in the public life of the community.
Life discipleship: equipping Christians for missional living as workers & neighbours.
Evangelism: faithful and relevant communication of the gospel.
What are the resources?
As well as the articles, stories and links to other organisations and their resources that you’ll find on this website, you can also get hold of:
Square Mile DVD course
Designed for small groups, this course will give you a biblical understanding of and a vision for integral mission, as well as the inspiration and means to take action.
Each session involves:
• A Bible study with input from theological experts, including Bishop Tom Wright, Elaine Storkey and Tim Keller, providing rationale for engaging in each of the four dimensions.
• Footage of Christians making a difference around the UK to envision and inspire.
• Insights from Shane Claiborne, Jim Wallis, Mark Greene and J John to motivate you and your group into action.
Square Mile journal
This contains daily readings, reflections and activities covering the period of a month. The journal can be followed on its own, but ideally complements the DVD course, so participants can follow the teaching themes during the week between group sessions.
Who are the partners?
The Evangelical Alliance has worked with a number of different churches and organisations to develop Square Mile and is grateful for all their input. Two of the key partners are:
Community Mission
Community Mission is a partnership started by Tearfund and Livability, formerly the Shaftesbury Society. We believe in faith in action and that a commitment to integral mission is at the heart of the gospel. Community mission is the outworking of that commitment. www.communitymission.org.uk
Spring Harvest
Spring Harvest exists to equip the Church for action. Through a range of events, conferences, books and resources, Spring Harvest seeks to enable Christians to impact their local communities and the wider world. www.springharvest.org
The Evangelical Alliance has around 700 member organisations and you can search among them here.
What is 'integral mission'?
The bible teaches that God calls his church to engage in both proclaiming the gospel and living out the message of the gospel. This means that mission involves combining word and deed, evangelism and social action, aid and development, personal and corporate witness.
For a more in-depth look at what this means read "Integral Mission for 4D Churches" and listen to David Westlake's talk on Holistic and Integral Mission
Does 'Square Mile' imply a London focus?
Square Mile is a UK-wide initiative and the ‘square mile’ referred to is not the financial district in London. We are encouraging Christians to take responsibility for the impact that they make in the square mile around them – in their communities at home, at church and at work.
