Holy Land Consultation - Selected Papers

On 26th June 2003, a one-day consultation was held at St Paul’s, Robert Adam Street, London. Chaired by Rev Dr David Hilborn, the consultation brought together expert contributions from different perspectives on three aspects of the Israel/Palestine issue:

  • The current political reality, with specific reference to the proposed ‘road map to peace';
  • The wider ideological forces bearing on the situation in the Middle East - pan-Arabic nationalism, Islamism, Zionism etc;
  • Competing Christian theologies of Israel – ‘Replacementism', Dispensationalism, Premillennialism etc, together with the debate about mission among the Jews.

Israel - An Accident of History or Fulfillment of Prophecy? by Tony Pearce
To answer this question we have to look back over events, which happened over a period of nearly 4000 years, recorded in the Bible. So we will look at this subject as a foundation for the next chapter, which will deal with what is happening in Israel today.
Israel as a focus for the anger of Muslims against the west by Colin Chapman
Is it surprising to find an Indian Muslim journalist, a young Palestinian in Jerusalem, a Guardian editorial in the UK and a right wing American conservative Christian all agreeing in recent months that the State of Israel is a major reason for the anger that many Muslims feel against the West?
Israel in God's plan by Steve Moyter

Road Maps, Radicals and Rejectionism by Peter G. Riddell
Once again violence has erupted in the Middle East. Suicide bombings by Palestinian activists in Israel and Israeli retaliatory strikes over the last month have caused the deaths of dozens of military personnel and civilians. This poses serious risks for the fragile movement towards Israeli-Palestinian negotiation built into the “Road Map for Peace”.
Theology of Land and Covenant by Stanley Brook
This report seeks to produce brief factual and non-judgemental snapshots of some of the major attitudes to Land and Covenant in Jewish, Christian and, to a lesser extent, Islamic thinking. Also, to re-examine the major themes of Land and Covenant in the Bible, and to to survey 20th century and contemporary Christian theological reflection on Land and Covenant in the light of the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 and the consequent Israeli/ Palestinian conflict.
