Eritrean Christians Are Positive About Parenting

A south Wales evangelical church consisting of Eritrean Evangelical Christians is getting serious about helping parents.

 A course called Positive Parenting was held on Saturday 24 April at the Gap Centre in Stow Hill Newport. The training was conducted in the languages of Amharic, English and Tigrinya and 15 people attended. The course was free and married couples and parents with children from the Eritrean Community in Newport and Cardiff took part.

 The training day covered the following topics:

  • The essence of good parenting
  • Where can I get help?
  • Single Parenting
  • Parenting Across Cultures
  • Protecting Children from Abuse
  • Domestic violence and parenting

 Training was delivered by Selam Kidane a specialist in the area of child protection and domestic violence. The day was facilitated by Semere Gebrehiwot   

 Semere Gebrehiwot said: "I believe the training will help to overcome some of the challenges faced by parents within the Eritrean Community by improving their knowledge on child protection legislation.

 "The training will also help to improve wellbeing and safety of Eritrean children and young people in South Wales by engaging effectively with parents and careers. 


The Eritrean church in now in its fourth year and is supervised by Bethel Community Church in Newport and City Temple Church in Cardiff.
