Asulym Seekers - South Wales Churches'Deeply Concerned'

Press Release

South Wales Refugee Council speak out after allegation made against BA.

26 February 2010

The South Wales Churches’ Refugee Network expresses deep concern over whistleblower Louise Perrett’s recent allegations of impropriety by UK BA Cardiff staff towards asylum seekers.

Our churches are committed to serving asylum seekers of all faiths and none, and to upholding their human dignity throughout the asylum process. Similarly, we expect the highest standards of care and sensitivity from UK BA staff as they process each individual’s claim.

We call for a full, thorough, and independent investigation to ensure that all those fleeing persecution are given a fair and just opportunity to seek sanctuary in the UK. We also call for the temporary suspension of the removal process concerning all asylum seekers whose cases were heard in Cardiff, until that investigation is fully conducted. The review of all failed cases that have been dealt with by UK BA Cardiff since its implementation in 2007 should also be considered, pending the investigation’s findings.

Jim Stewart, Chair of the South Wales Churches Refugee network, said “Although we appreciate the useful work done by UK BA staff in Cardiff, these allegations, if proven, could well be the ‘fly in the ointment’ that undermines aspects of good practice within the system.”

“Asylum seekers are often traumatised by their experiences and it is essential for their morale and well-being that they do not lose faith in the system. These allegations have been particularly demoralising to them and their right to a fair and just hearing is of the utmost importance.”
