#### Tarot and manifesting are on the rise, and the early church’s example can help us respond, says Katherine Brown

I meet a lot of people that would describe themselves as ‘spiritual’. They’re not Christians; actually, they wouldn’t subscribe to any religion, but they’re open to the idea that there could be something more and that this world is not all there is. They sense that science doesn’t have all the answers that they long for; they’re just not sure what the answer is.

This group is growing, and I imagine you may have had similar conversations. How do we share our faith with these spiritually curious people and invite them to know Jesus?

Many are drawn to practices under the New Age banner: manifesting, crystals, tarot cards, psychics. Once niche, these practices have gone viral and are now widely accessible and seen as acceptable in society.

> How do we share our faith with these spiritually curious people and invite them to know Jesus? ”

In recent weeks, Tesco launched a new F&F clothing line themed around tarot cards, paying influential online tarot readers to front the ads and putting billboards all over the country. Pandora has released jewellery based on star signs, and KitKat used “manifesting a break” in a recent ad campaign. These marketing teams have millions of pounds behind them and will have studied what’s popular. Alternative spirituality is well and truly ‘in’.

As Christians, we shouldn’t be frightened of this. In fact, I see it as a real opportunity to make Jesus known.

Many of us have got used to sharing our faith in a secular society. We brace ourselves, after sharing about Jesus, for the weird looks, the awkward silences, or people’s anger. For a while, believing in God often meant being seen as old-fashioned, strange, maybe even a bit foolish. That’s no longer the case. Secularism hasn’t produced a generation of contented atheists, instead, it’s produced an age of spiritual curiosity. I wonder whether we may be moving into a post-secular world, where it’s more common to believe there could be something more, to have some form of spiritual practice, and to be open to a higher power. Whether that is true or not, it is clear that believing in a spiritual reality — whatever that may be — is becoming more of a societal norm or socially acceptable.

> Secularism hasn't produced a generation of contented atheists, instead, it’s produced an age of spiritual curiosity.”

Although we may have gotten used to a secular society, actually a world of competing beliefs, false gods and syncretism is far more normal across all of human history. The spiritual awakening we find ourselves in is much closer to the world the early church ministered in than to the few decades of atheism we’ve just lived through.

That doesn’t mean throwing out all our apologetics and courses, but there are some things we can learn from the early church about how to share our faith effectively in this time.

  #### Take time to be curious

In Acts 17, Paul walked around the marketplace in Athens and noticed how and what people were worshipping. Do you know what manifesting is? Have you seen what spiritual events are popping up in your area? Have you noticed the ad campaigns, or the celebrities talking about their spiritual practices? Be curious, so that when you share, you can connect what people are doing to the invitation of the gospel – that’s what Paul did.

  #### Pray

We’re in a spiritual battle. The early church was committed to prayer and fasting, and in Matthew 17 we see a little boy who was experiencing demonic oppression, Jesus said that this will only be resolved through prayer: “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.” Spiritual realities require a like response; let’s pray that people turn away from the counterfeits they’ve been handed, away from the kingdom of darkness, and turn to the kingdom of light, to Jesus.

  #### Be clear in your invitation

Many will say they believe in Jesus but simply add Him to their spiritual toolkit: tarot on a Friday, church on a Sunday. The world that they have been raised in encourages this kind of individualistic approach to worship. Jesus gives no framework for this kind of pick-and-mix spirituality. You’re either all in, or you’re not. Let’s make sure we proclaim Jesus as the only way, not just one good option. That following Him requires leaving old ways behind. As Jesus says in John 14, “I am The Way and The Truth and The Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
