Member of the Month: Christians in Sport

Did you know that the Alliance has more than 600 member organisations, 4,000 member churches and thousands of individual members? Why not join us? Find out more here.

When did Christians in Sport start?

It was 40 years ago in 1976 that a group of Christian sportspeople got together with the vision to live out and share their faith in the world of sport. They prayed that someone would come forward to administrate a sports fellowship across the nation, that there would be regional fellowship groups for Christian professional sportspeople and that their work would be an example to other European nations.

This group, made of people from the world of elite sport, dreamed of a network across the sporting world that would unite and encourage Christians. It was a powerful and contagious vision of Christians worshipping and witnessing in teams and clubhouses across the country.

From this starting point, Christians in Sport was founded in 1980 and we have sought to continue and build on those aims and that vision ever since.

What do you do?

Christians in Sport has one main purpose: we exist to reach the world of sport for Christ and long to see Christians and churches everywhere engaging in the world of sport around them. More than 15 million people in the UK play sport each week, so it is a huge mission field.

From elite athletes to recreational players, coaches to physios, we want to encourage Christian sportspeople in their faith and help them share the gospel in their clubs, teams and organisations. We do this in partnership with local churches, who we look to equip with the resources we produce such as the Sports Mission Pack.

Where do you work?

Christians in Sport work across the UK and we have staff based in a number of cities, with a head office in Bicester.

We work with young people, students, adults, churches and elite athletes to support and encourage Christian sportspeople and reach out to those who do not yet know Christ.

How can Christians in the UK get involved?

We long to see Christians in each of the UK's 150,000 sports clubs. If you are a follower of Jesus and enjoy your sport, a great start would be to join a local club and be a gospel witness there. We would love to support and encourage more Christian sportspeople in this mission and partner with more churches. Visit christiansinsport.org.uk/signup to get in touch and find out more.

Why are you a member of the Evangelical Alliance?

The main reason is that we think they have an excellent statement of faith that covers the fundamental beliefs of evangelical Christians, but is wide enough to accept the cultural differences among evangelicals. That sums up our approach to the work of Christians in Sport as we look to serve the local Church.
