Put your church on the map for National Adoption Sunday

Every day more than 50 children are taken into care in the UK. They are removed from chaotic, traumatic, abusive, neglectful or desperate situations. Many are desperate for a home. Your church can help.

On 3 November, join with churches throughout the UK to celebrate our adoption into God's family and consider what we can do to support the thousands of children living in care. It's easy to be involved in National Adoption Sunday – whether a 10-minute slot or an entire service.

There are now 4,600 children waiting for adoption and 9,000 more foster placements are desperately needed. We can raise awareness of this need. The Church can make a difference.

Home for Good is a coalition that supports churches to get involved with fostering and adoption and is in contact with 15,000 churches – if just one family from each church chose to foster or adopt, and other families wrapped around them to offer the support they need, it could wipe out the waiting list. Wouldn't it be great if the Church in the UK was known for that?

John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York said: "Christians have a strong historic track record of showing compassion and concern for the poor, the marginalised and the vulnerable. With such an unacceptably high number of children waiting for adoption in the UK and the pressing need for more foster carers we have both a challenge and an opportunity on our doorsteps."

We know how busy church life can be and the multiple demands there are on the time of church leaders, so it is simple.

Here's how:

  1. Put your church on the map by registering your church to take part. If you can't take part on 3 November, don't worry – choose a date that suits you.
  2. We'll then send you everything you need to prepare an inspiring service – including a step-by-step guide and a pack full of ideas and resources that you can use 'as is' or adapt to suit your church (including children's activities, sermon ideas and small group questions).
  3. We will also provide you with prayer bookmarks that you can give every person at the service – so they can continue to pray for vulnerable children.
