The United Nations Climate Summit, COP29, will convene in Baku, Azerbaijan, in the coming days (11-22 November). This annual conference of the parties is essential for global action on climate change as they bring together world leaders, scientists, activists, and policymakers to set ambitious goals, negotiate binding agreements, and share innovative solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. They provide a critical platform for countries to coordinate efforts, secure funding for climate resilience, and hold each other accountable for protecting our planet.

For Christians, this gathering is not just a political event but an opportunity to engage in prayer and action as we respond to the pressing issue of climate change. God calls us to be stewards of creation, showing love and compassion to those most affected by environmental crises. As representatives from around the world gather, Christians can advocate for transformative policies like Loss and Damage Funding, which provide support to vulnerable communities grappling with the devastating impacts of climate change.

Loss and Damage Funding addresses the stark reality that those who contribute least to climate change often suffer its worst effects. This fund seeks to support countries with limited resources to recover from climate-induced disasters, helping them rebuild homes, livelihoods, and essential infrastructure. One moving example comes from Tearfund’s work in Pakistan, which received £250,000 from the Scottish Government to assist with the recovery following Pakistan’s catastrophic floods in 2022. Over 33 million people were displaced, and the country faced losses estimated at over $30 billion. The Loss and Damage Funding, made possible through decades of campaigning, allowed organisations like Tearfund to help communities in Rajanpur, Punjab, restore vital water supplies and support women in rebuilding their livelihoods.

The impact of this funding is profound. In one community, Haseena, a widow with six children, was provided livestock and feed through the project, enabling her to start a small business to provide for her family. These life-transforming changes testify to the real, tangible ways that Loss and Damage Funding can help families restore their lives, reflecting the call in James 2:15 – 16 to actively meet the needs of those facing hardship.

As COP29 begins, let’s join together in prayer. We can ask God to guide the discussions, soften hearts, and inspire a spirit of co-operation among world leaders. We are reminded in Micah 6:8 that God calls us to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly” with Him. This summit is an opportunity to advocate for justice for those facing the brunt of climate change impacts.

Together we can pray for:

  • Wisdom for leaders – that they may approach these negotiations with humility and a desire for justice rather than political gain. Pray they would recognise their responsibility toward those most affected by climate change and work toward sustainable solutions.
  • Strengthening commitments through Loss and Damage Funding – pray that COP29 results in increased funding commitments toward Loss and Damage Funds. This funding is critical in empowering vulnerable communities to recover from climate disasters and build resilience for the future.
  • Advocacy and awareness – ask for courage for Christian leaders, churches, and organisations worldwide to advocate for climate justice. Pray for opportunities for Christians to support these efforts year-round, raising awareness in their communities and encouraging others to act.
  • Protection for affected communities – pray for God’s protection over communities currently affected by climate-related disasters. Whether it’s drought in Africa or floods in South Asia, ask God to provide strength, hope, and practical support for those in need. Pray for organisations who work tirelessly to help communities recover and rebuild.

The COP29 summit offers a moment of collective reflection and action in the fight against climate change. Christians are called not only to protect God’s creation but also to uphold justice and mercy for those who are suffering. Stories like Haseena’s show the profound impact of Loss and Damage Funding, reminding us that even in the face of disaster, hope and resilience can flourish with the right support. By praying, advocating, and committing to sustainable living, we actively participate in God’s redemptive work on Earth, joining in the effort to restore hope and dignity to those who need it most.

As we lift up COP29 in prayer, may we be encouraged to continue our climate justice work throughout the year, embodying Christ’s love for all creation and committing to be faithful stewards of His world.
