The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill
The Evangelical Alliance Scotland’s public affairs remit generally focuses on issues specific to the Scottish Parliament and Government, Scottish local authorities and Scottish media, but we also feel it is important to highlight issues of particular significance being address by our member organisations at a wider UK level.
The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill is currently going through the UK House of Commons.
CARE for Scotland along with other EA member organisations have spearheaded a nation-wide campaign to raise awareness of the threat this Bill has for human dignity. Among the proposals in the Bill are:
- Allowing scientists to create embryos which are part human and part animal
- Allowing the creation of ‘saviour siblings’ children selected principally to provide spare part tissue for a brother or sister
- Removing the obligation for IVF clinics to ‘have regard for the child’s need for a father’
- Indication that some MPs may use the passage of this Bill to press for further liberalisation of the present abortion legislation.
We would encourage you to follow the process of this Bill through Parliament and pray for every MP that is involved. You may also wish to contact your local MP to let them hear your views. To find out who your MP is, see www.writetothem.com.
Please also pray for the work of CARE for Scotland and other organisations raising awareness of this Bill.
